Adefovir Tablets: Antiviral Therapy for Chronic Hepatitis B Management
Adefovir Dipivoxil (commonly marketed as Hepsera) is an oral antiviral medication used for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in individuals aged 12 years and older. It belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs).
Adefovir works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme critical for the replication of HBV. This halts the reproduction of the virus within human cells, reducing viral load and limiting liver damage.
While Adefovir is not a cure for HBV, it helps lower the amount of virus in the body and may slow disease progression, especially in patients who cannot tolerate first-line antivirals.
Therapeutic Indications
Chronic Hepatitis B Infection in adults and adolescents (≥12 years old)
Lamivudine-resistant HBV infections (under medical supervision)
HBV-related liver inflammation and fibrosis management in select patient populations
