Alprostadil injection is a versatile medication with applications in both adult urology and neonatal cardiology. It is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men and to manage certain congenital heart defects in newborns.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED):

Alprostadil is considered a second-line treatment for ED, especially in cases where oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) are ineffective or contraindicated. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle within the penile arteries and enhancing blood flow to the erectile tissue, facilitating erection. It is also used diagnostically to assess erectile function during specialized testing.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) in Newborns:

In neonates with congenital heart defects, Alprostadil is administered intravenously to maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus—a critical blood vessel that allows blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery—until corrective surgical intervention is possible.

Diagnostic Use in ED:

Alprostadil injections may also be used as part of diagnostic protocols, such as penile Doppler ultrasound, to evaluate the vascular causes of erectile dysfunction.
