Adenosine Injection: Rapid-Acting Antiarrhythmic for Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)
Adenosine Injection is a short-acting antiarrhythmic agent primarily used to restore normal sinus rhythm in patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), including that associated with accessory bypass tracts (e.g., Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome). It works by slowing conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node, momentarily interrupting abnormal electrical circuits in the heart and allowing normal rhythm to resume.
-
Adenosine binds to A1 receptors in the heart, reducing calcium influx and increasing potassium efflux, which results in transient AV nodal block
-
Its ultra-short half-life (~10 seconds) allows precise control and rapid therapeutic action
-
Additionally studied for its role in ocular blood flow regulation, with endogenous adenosine being linked to glaucoma pathophysiology
-
Therapeutic Uses
-
Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT)
-
Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (as a diagnostic and therapeutic agent)
-
Pharmacologic stress testing (in myocardial perfusion imaging, off-label)
-
Investigational role in glaucoma therapy (via modulation of intraocular pressure)
-
